’Cuse Defeats RPI in a Nonconference Matchup

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse Orange women's ice hockey team took game one of the series against RPI Friday afternoon, defeating the Engineers 3-1 at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse (7-10-2) outshot the Engineers 35-25 and received another great performance from Ava Drabyk, who made 24 saves including several power play stops late in the game. The victory gives Syracuse momentum heading into game two of the series.
RPI (4-14-0) fought hard throughout but couldn't overcome the deficit when the Orange started pulling away late in the third. Goaltender Reese Keating made 32 saves in the effort.
How it Happened
- Syracuse struck first at 4:19 of the opening period when Stella Costabile lit the lamp assisted by Jackson Kinsler and Nea Tervonen, to give the Orange a 1-0 lead.
- RPI tied the game at 3:19 of the second period on a shorthanded goal by Georgia Bailey assisted by Kendal Davidson and Aylah Cioffi.
- Syracuse regained the lead at 4:17 of the third period when Tervonen found the back of the net assisted by Kinsler and Maya D'Arcy, which proved to be the game-winner.
- Late in the third, Charlotte Hallett sealed the victory with an unassisted empty-net goal at 18:14.
Behind the Numbers
- Costabile led the Orange offense with six shots on goal and the opening goal.
- Kinsler had two assists on the afternoon.
- Tervonen recorded a goal and an assist while winning 8 of 17 faceoffs.
- The Orange defense was solid with a 11 blocked shots.
