NEWARK, Del. – Syracuse softball (12-2) travels to the Blue Hen Invitational from Thursday, Feb. 27, to Saturday, March 1, for a five-game slate at Delaware Softball Diamond. The Orange will face Quinnipiac and host Delaware twice each, along with a single game against Morgan State.
The Blue Hen Invite begins on Thursday night (Feb. 27) with Syracuse facing Delaware at 5 p.m. The Orange will then play a pair of games on Friday (Feb. 28), taking on Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m. before a rematch with the Blue Hens at 5:30 p.m. 'Cuse will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday (March 1) doubleheader against Morgan State at 10 a.m., followed by a second matchup with Quinnipiac at 12:30 p.m.
Both of Syracuse's games against Delaware will air live on FloCollege. Live stats will be available for all five contests, allowing fans to follow along with the action.
ORANGE UPDATE:
Syracuse is coming off a successful three-win weekend at the Georgia Classic from Feb. 21-23, defeating Buffalo, 7-0, Utah Valley, 3-2, and App State, 6-3. The win over Utah Valley marked the team's first walk-off victory of the season, with catcher Laila Morales-Alves delivering the game-winning RBI double to left center. The Orange enter the Blue Hen Invitational with a 12-2 record, a feat they have achieved only once before, in the 2011 season. Syracuse's only two losses this year came against No. 9 Georgia.
Syracuse's pitching staff has been among the best in the country through the first three weeks of the season. The five-player rotation boasts a 1.14 earned run average, ranking first in the ACC and second in the nation. Julianna Verni and Madison Knight have been standout performers, each logging 32.2 and 32.0 innings, respectively. Neither pitcher has an ERA above 1.00, with Verni leading the ACC at 0.43 and Knight ranking fourth in the conference at 0.88.
The 'Cuse offense has been powered by junior Madelyn Lopez and senior Angie Ramos, who are hitting .489 (22-for-45) and .459 (17-for-37), respectively. Kelly Breen is also off to a strong start with a .391 average. As a team, Syracuse is batting .354 (134-for-378), with Lopez's 22 hits and the trio's nine RBIs apiece leading the way.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
The Blue Hens have started the season with a 4-6 record, highlighted by their first-ever ranked victory over Michigan. Gianna Costaro leads Delaware's offense, batting .333 (8-for-24) with seven RBIs and two home runs. Sydney Shaffer (.323), Chloe Blantz (.323), and Mary Beth Cahalan (.308) are also hitting above .300, contributing to the Blue Hens' offensive efforts. In the circle, Billie Kerwood has been the staff's workhorse, making nine appearances (five starts) and logging 37.0 innings pitched.
Quinnipiac holds a 2-6 record through its first eight games of the season, with wins over Columbia and Florida Gulf Coast. Sofia Vega leads the Bobcats at the plate, batting .304 (7-for-23), while Natalia Apatiga has driven in a team-high eight runs on six hits. In the circle, Sydney Horan has been the workhorse, pitching 39.1 of the team's 50.1 innings, recording 30 strikeouts, and posting a 2.31 ERA.
Morgan State holds a 2-8 record through its first 10 games of the season, earning wins over Notre Dame in its season opener and FDU last weekend. Nia Lewis is off to a strong start for the Bears, batting .444 (8-for-18) with three RBIs. Victoria Fletcher (.348) and Amber Rivas (.308) have also been key contributors at the plate. Fletcher, a two-way player, leads Morgan State's pitching staff with 34 innings pitched, recording 19 strikeouts and a 3.71 ERA.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST THIS WEEKEND'S OPPONENT
Syracuse and Delaware have only matched up once in their history with the Orange claiming a 10-6 win over the Blue Hens on March 21, 2004.
'Cuse's games against Quinnipiac will be the third and fourth in the all-time series between programs. The Orange hold a 2-0 advantage over the Bobcats, including a 4-1 win last season on March 12, 2024.
The Orange have won both games in the series against Morgan State, outscoring the Bears, 19-2, across both games.
