Two Syracuse Oarswomen were named to preseason watch lists on Wednesday afternoon. Captain Aphrodite Giolekas was tabbed as one of 12 student-athletes on the ACC Rowing Watch List while sophomore Ellie-Kate Hutchinson was named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Athletes to Watch List.Â
Giolekas, a graduate student from Melbourne, Australia, was a 2024 All-ACC First Team selection a year ago helping guide the Orange to the first ACC Championship in program history. She sat 2-seat of the Varsity Eight that was named ACC Boat of the Year after defeating Virginia by five seconds to clinch the team title on a tiebreaker. Off the water, Giolekas is a three-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete and All-ACC Academic Team honoree.Â
Hutchinson, a sophomore, sat seven seat of the Varsity Eight a season ago. She was one of two freshmen in the top Orange boat that clinched the ACC Championship with a first-place finish beating defending champion Virginia by a length. Hutchinson won gold this past summer at the U23 World Rowing Championships in St. Catherine's in Ontario, Canada, sitting seven seat of Great Britain's Women's Eight.Â
The Orange begin the spring campaign on March 15 with an exhibition race against Virginia in Charlottesville before officially kicking off the season at the B1G/ACC/Ivy Dual March 22 in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Orange will race Michigan, Penn and Ohio State to open the season.Â
