CHARLOTTE, N.C. – For the second time in the last four weeks, Syracuse University men's lacrosse junior Jimmy McCool has been selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) made its announcement Tuesday afternoon.
McCool led the then eighth-ranked Orange to a 12-10 win on the road at Virginia, snapping a tie in the all-time series against the Cavaliers. The Bostonian made 17 saves in his first ACC win as the starting netminder, including nine in the second half.
After a slow start, McCool and the defense in front of him were lights out, holding a potent Virginia offense to just five goals over the final 50 minutes of the game. After the first quarter, McCool did not allow the Cavaliers consecutive goals for the remainder of the game.
McCool made saves at a 63.0 percent rate at Klöckner Stadium on Saturday while holding Virginia to two goals less than its scoring average entering the opening weekend of league play.
Notre Dame's Jake Taylor was selected as the ACC Offensive Player of the Week, setting up a storyline for this weekend's game.
No. 7 Syracuse takes on No. 5 Notre Dame on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start on ACC Network. Anish Shroff '04 and All-American midfielder Paul Carcaterra '97 have the call this week. The ACC home opener for Syracuse pits two top five offenses and two top 10 defense against one another.
