The Orange women's basketball team (21-5, 11-4) took down Clemson (18-9, 9-6) on Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the JMA Wireless Dome. Sophie Burrows' double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds helped push Syracuse over the Tigers for the 14th time in program history and the fourth win of the Felisha Legette-Jack era.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Uche Izoje's jumper from the paint put the Orange on the board on the first drive of the game. Syracuse put pressure on the Tigers, keeping Clemson scoreless for the first three minutes and 48 seconds of the game. Izoje blocked Clemson's shot in the paint in the middle of the first quarter, putting it into Shy Hawkins' hands. The guard passed it back to Izoje who finished at the rim, sending the game into a media timeout. SU closed out the first quarter with a 17-12 advantage.Â
Olivia Schmitt found Jasmyn Cooper down the court to put up two points for SU to start the second quarter. Schmitt's step-back three-pointer in the middle of the quarter drew a roar from the crowd. Laila Phelia drove to the basket, drawing a foul and sending her to the line to complete a three-point play. Burrows saved the ball from going out of bounds, passing it to Hawkins who snuck past a group of defenders, putting up two more points for the Orange before heading into the locker room. Syracuse led the Tigers 34-28.Â
Dominique Darius inbounded the ball to Phelia who found the rim on the first play of the third quarter. Izoje found the rim, drawing a foul and completing a three-point play to extend the lead. Burrows' jumper gave her a double-double, her first of the season. Clemson narrowly outscored the Orange 20-19 in the third quarter, but 'Cuse still held a 53-48 advantage entering the final 10 minutes of the game. Â
Clemson took the lead for the first time in the game in the fourth quarter, but Burrows answered with a bucket from beyond the arc to take the advantage back. Burrows continued to fight in the paint, collecting her own rebound and finding the rim to add another two points to the board. The Orange led by two points with 14.7 seconds remaining in the game when Clemson called a timeout. SU's defense prevented the Tigers from scoring with 6.8 seconds remaining. Syracuse called a timeout, bringing the ball down the court. The Tigers continued to foul on each Orange inbound, putting SU in the bonus. Hawkins went to the line, knocking in both of her free throws to give 'Cuse a four-point lead. Clemson had one last chance to score but was unable to finish the drive. Syracuse defeated the Tigers for the 14th time in program history, 68-64.Â
