Kansas State defeated Syracuse 35-18 in the 1997 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium. The loss snapped SU’s seven-game bowl winning streak.
Syracuse took an early lead on a 27-yard field goal by Nate Trout, but KSU scored three straight touchdowns to take a 21-3 advantage with 2:18 remaining in the first half. SU came back and scored three times in the final two minutes of the second quarter, including a 24-yard touchdown run by Dee Brown, to close the gap to 21-15 at the break.
The defenses took over in the third quarter, as neither team scored. KSU struck first in the fourth quarter on a 77-yard touchdown pass from game MVP Michael Bishop to Darnell McDonald. Trout finished the SU scoring with his Fiesta Bowl record-tying third field goal, a 40-yarder, with 9:59 remaining in the contest.
Orange quarterback Donovan McNabb was 16-of-39 passing for 271 yards. He also rushed for 81 yards. Kevin Johnson caught four passes for 101 yards, and Brown ran for 47 yards.
Will Allen recorded his first career interception. Antwaune Ponds had 11 tackles and Donovin Darius had 10. Johnson had six kickoff returns for 130 yards, including a 55-yard runback in the second quarter.
