Syracuse Player Quotes - Iowa
Syracuse Men’s Basketball
Syracuse vs. Iowa
December 3, 2019
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Joseph Girard III, Fr., G
What do you see offensively that is not clicking right now?
“It has been tough finding the shots and making the shots. We are usually at our best when we are in transition. We have not been able to do that recently and we just have to get better.”
Is it more action up top - Coach Boeheim said you are doing more movement than ever?
“At the beginning of the year we were moving the ball really well – getting a lot of open shots, making a lot of open shots. And we just have not been able to do that the last few games and that is what has hurt us. (We have to) get back to the basics and stay focused.”
What do you and Buddy Boeheim have to do to get out of the shooting slump?
“Stay focused. Not think about it. Have no conscience and like I said, try to get back to winning.”
Do you feel like you have been pressing?
“No. I think we have been playing the same way, we just were not getting the same shots we were at the beginning of the year. Like coach said we have to get back to what we were doing, moving a lot, get out and running. We just have not been able to do that.”
Elijah Hughes, R-Jr., F
Do you feel like these last three games you have had to do everything to get this team to win?
“No. I am just going with the flow of the game and I just missed some shots today. (Iowa) forced me into some tough shots and I just could not get them.”
Were they doing anything special to get you out of your rhythm?
“I think they had their best defender on me. They made it very tough for me when I got in the lane and I just could not get anything going.”
It seemed as if you were being face guarded. When someone does that do you have to change the way you play offense?
“Other guys have to get open and I have to help other guys at that point. I have to be a playmaker and be a guy who can get other guys involved.”
Did Iowa take away your ability as a distributor tonight?
“Not necessarily. There were times I got guys some shots and they missed, but not necessarily.”
When Joseph Girard III and Buddy Boeheim are not hitting from outside does it affect the whole offense?
“No. When they are not making shots, they still have to shoot the ball. It is that simple. They know that and they are going to keep shooting and get better. We are all going to get better. It does not take a toll on anybody if they are not making shots. It is going to happen. It happens to the best, so I am not worried about it. I think they are going to come out ready to shoot.”
Marek Dolezaj, Jr., F
How do you guys handle these losses as a team?
“You just have to forget about it. We just need to come back, play defense, and keep adding baskets. We need to start moving the ball and play better.”
What was the message from Coach Boeheim and the coaching staff after this game?
“We just need to get better. All of our guys, from Elijah (Hughes) to our young guys, we need to step it up.”
What are you seeing from your game?
“I just need to play better and do a better job on defense.”
What needs to happen for more movement and rhythm offensively?
“We just need to move the ball. In the beginning of the season, we moved the ball. Even when we played Virginia, we tried to move the ball. The last few games, we’ve stopped. Everybody is trying to score, we play one-on-one. Every play, we need to just keep moving the ball and we will find open shots.”
Buddy Boeheim, So., G
Is it going to take a game where you make some shots to feel better about your shots?
“I think it’s just next shot, next game. I’m going to be just as confident as the first game. That’s what you have to do as a shooter. All the best shooters go through a slump but it’s about the next shot.”
Can you talk about the task you guys have ahead of you on Saturday against Georgia Tech?
“They’re a tough team. They beat us here last year pretty good. They played a tough matchup zone and we just have to figure out how to attack that better this year, keep it up on the defensive end and we’ll be just fine.”
How do you guys avoid panicking after a 4-4 start to the season?
“It’s only eight games into the season. Our four losses aren’t bad losses. It’s not like we have a bad loss like last year. We’re a young team so we’ve got to get through this and just play hard and work hard every day. We have to keep our heads up. It’s early and a lot can change. We have to focus on Georgia Tech on Saturday.”
