Brad Hemmerly enters his second season as assistand coach in 2012-13. His first season in Orange was a successful one as he helped lead SU to its best finish in 22 years, placing fifth in the varsity eight grand final at the IRA National Championship. He also helped guide Syracuse to a 2-1 cup record, winning the Conlan and Packard Cups.
SU head coach Dave Reischman added Hemmerly to his staff as an assistant in August 2011. A native of Pickerington, Ohio, Hemmerly was the interim head coach at Williams College in 2010-11. His seven-year coaching career also includes stints at the U.S. Junior Women’s National Team Development Camp, New Haven Rowing Club and the Ohio State University Crew Club.
While at Williams, Hemmerly won two NCAA national championships as an assistant under current Syracuse University women’s head rowing coach Justin Moore and a third as the interim head coach in 2011. Hemmerly was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference co-Coach of the Year in 2011. He also helped lead Williams to three ECAC and New England Championships.
In addition to coaching at Williams, Hemmerly spent a portion of the 2010 and 2011 summers as an assistant coach at the USRowing Junior Women’s Development Camp. The camp taught basic boat moving skills and provided the developing athletes with important information to aid their improvement throughout the coming year.
Prior to arriving at Williams, Hemmerly was an assistant coach with the women’s club program at his alma mater, Ohio State University, for five years. He led the novice crews to podium finishes at every major regatta and finished his final season at OSU by leading the women’s varsity eight to gold at the inaugural ACRA Championship.
During his tenure at OSU, Hemmerly's crews not only medaled at SIRA, Dad Vails, and ACRA, they also won the 2007 Dad Vail Women’s Team Championship and the 2008 ACRA Women’s Team Championship.
As a rower at Ohio State, Hemmerly was elected captain an unprecedented three times, raced in the Varsity Eight, and was awarded the "Scarlet and Grey Award,” which is presented to the oarsman who inspires teammates and never loses sight of the fact that success is dependent upon the unity and commitment of the team.
Hemmerly is a 2007 OSU graduate; he earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
