Tommy Costanza joined the Syracuse men’s lacrosse coaching staff as a volunteer assistant in January, 2020, bringing with him more than a decade of coaching experience at the collegiate and club levels. In his first season at the helm, he oversaw the faceoff specialists who finished the year ranked fifth nationally with a .671 winning percentage.
While the season was shortened to just five games, but Jakob Phaup (.679) and Danny Varello (.631) were atop the ACC in faceoff win percentage and ranked in the top-12 nationally in the statistic. The Orange also were third nationally with 41.2 ground balls per game.
Costanza joined the Orange following a stint at SUNY Oswego and was formerly the Chief Logistics and Communications Officer for SweetLax, a prominent club that has coached a multitude of Division I talent. From 2013-19, the organization has produced 152 NCAA Division I players.
At Syracuse, Costanza is responsible for assisting with faceoff specialists and helping Lelan Rogers with the Orange defense. He’ll also play a role in coordinating the Orange’s camps and clinics.
Costanza joined the Oswego staff in the fall of 2018, helping lead the Lakers to an 8-6 record. It was just the fourth time in the decade that the program finished the year above .500, before falling to eventual No. 1 Cortland in the SUNYAC Semifinals.
Prior to his time at Oswego, Costanza was an assistant coach at Hampden-Sydney. In his two years with the Tigers, they posted a combined 19-15 record with a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference playoff appearances. Prior to that, he also spent time as an assistant coach at SUNY Geneseo and Wesley College.
A Webster, N.Y. native, Costanza attended SUNY Geneseo for his undergrad, earning many All-Conference accolades, while breaking the school record for most goals in a single season (52). He was named a 2019 USILA All-American and Academic All-American, earning second and first team All-SUNYAC and All-Tournament status.
Costanza holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a minor in communication from Geneseo, before going on to earn a Masters from Wesley College.
