Over the past few weeks, head coach Ange Bradley has continually announced her class of 2017. Previously, she announced Florine Hogendoorn, Claire Cooke, Borg van der Velde, Sarah Luby, Isabelle Sumichrast and Emma Likly.
A Two-time California Interscholastic Federation First Team honoree from San Diego, California, Audrey Matthew is set to bolster the Syracuse backfield in 2017.
"Audrey is aggressive smart, aware and a very free player," said head coach Ange Bradley. "Her mentality of learning, failing, learning and succeeding will position her to compete for a starting position in our backfield this fall. I have a ton of belief in Audrey's mentality and hockey ability. I am happy to have her as part of our Syracuse team."
Matthew was a three-year varsity letterwinner under head coach Jane Morrill at Scripps Ranch High School, where she recorded 21 goals and 21 assists as a senior playing center forward and leading her team to the CIF Open Division Final. She also served as a team captain.
"Audrey is a hard worker who will improve every year due to her dedication to being the best she can be," Morrill said.
In addition to her high school success, Matthew played for RUSH field hockey club under head coach Brian Schledorn. While playing for RUSH, she helped her team win the RUSH festival, the Presidents' Day U19 Showcase and the National U19 Showcase while playing outside back.
"Audrey continues to impress me with her dedication to improve," Schledorn said. "She will be missed in our program, but I am excited to see her immediate impact at Syracuse."
Matthew intends to major in health and exercise science at SU, where she can eventually go into physical therapy. Her goal is to help future athletes in the same way that physical therapy has helped her.
In addition to her academic pursuits, Matthew has her sights set on accomplishing big goals on the field as well.
"Athletically, I want to work hard every day and be the best athlete I can be," Matthew said. "I want to contribute to something greater than myself, which is the team and the entire program. Personally, I want to be able to contribute to the team in positive ways no matter what these ways may be."
Additionally, Matthew looks forward to having the opportunity to play in the nation's best-field hockey conference.
"Having the opportunity to play in the ACC to me means that I have the chance to improve myself as a player by playing at a high level and being able to carry my passion into a more competitive atmosphere where I continually push myself," Matthew said.                                 Â
The daughter of Chris and Gina Matthew, Audrey has one sister, Ava. She hopes to leave a legacy or hard work and determination at Syracuse, and be a player who continues the strong legacy of the Syracuse hockey family.
Â
"The opportunity to represent the Orange on Coyne Field to me means that I have the opportunity to represent a family and a community," Matthew said. "It means being able to represent something with complete passion and desire. Most importantly being able to represent the Orange means being able to contribute to a school and a family that has given so much opportunity to me and many others."
