
SU Defeats Manhattan, 78-58

SYRACUSE, NY --Junior guard DeShaun Williams scored 22 points and senior forward Preston Shumpert chipped in with 21 to lead Syracuse to a 78-58 win against Manhattan in the first round of the Preseason NIT.
Syracuse trailed in the opening minutes of the game but after Shumpert tied the game at 11 with a three-point basket, SU went on a 20-3 run to give the Orangemen a 17-point lead at 31-14. Williams and Shumpert both scored 10 points in the first half as SU entered intermission in front, 34-23.
Williams hit his third three-point basket of the night midway through the second half to put the Orangemen ahead by 19 at 61-42. The evenings work moved Williams into ninth place on Syracuse's career three-point list with 107. SU extended the margin to 22, its largest of the game, at 68-46, with 5:16 left in the game.
Junior guard Kueth Duany joined Williams and Shumpert in double digits with 12 points. Freshman Josh Pace scored all seven of his points in the second period, and sophomore guard James Thues tied a career high with seven assists. Shumpert pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Syracuse shot 54 percent from the field from the field for the game, compared to Manhattan's 35 percent shooting.
