The 18th-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team lost to the University of Maryland, 6-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2001 NCAA Tournament. SU goalie Audrey Latsko (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) turned away 21 Maryland shots, including 16 in the first half. That mark ties for sixth on the NCAA Tournament single-game saves record list and matches Latsko's previous career-high (vs. Fairfield, 2000).
Maryland took a 3-0 lead in the first half and added three more goals in the second period. Terrapins forward Caroline Walter netted a hat trick.
The Orangewomen close the 2001 season with a 16-4 overall record. SU was 5-0 in BIG EAST regular season play and won both the BIG EAST regular season title and the BIG EAST Tournament championship.
