SYRACUSE, NY - A career-high 28 points by junior DeShaun Williams helped push #12/10 Syracuse past Virginia Tech, 81-69, on Saturday night.
A Carrier Dome crowd of 23,226, the second-largest on-campus crowd in college basketball this season, saw Syracuse snap a two-game losing streak. The Orangemen improved to 17-4 overall and 6-1 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Hokies stand at 6-13, 0-7.
The Hokies scored five quick points starting off the second half to take their largest lead of the game, 37-30. Syracuse responded with 10 unanswered points to grab a 40-37 advantage. Preston Shumpert, who finished with 25 points, scored eight points in the run.
The lead see-sawed back and forth between the two teams until the Orange tied the game for the final time at 52-52 after a James Thues free throw with 8:37 left in the game. Syracuse took control with a 19-9 run to take a 71-61 lead with 1:52 left in the game. Williams connected on six free throw attempts to seal the win.
Williams (8-for-8) and Thues (6-for-6) were both perfect from the charity stripe. Thues scored all six of his points from the line and dished out a career-high 10 assists.
The Hokies held a 33-30 lead at intermission after scoring the final six points of the half.
Bryant Matthews lead four Hokie players in double figures with 16 points, and Carlton Carter controlled the boards with 11 rebounds.
The Orangemen return to action on Monday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Washington, DC to play Georgetown at 7 p.m.
