Syracuse and Pittsburgh meet in a key BIG EAST Conference West Division clash on Sunday afternoon at noon in the Carrier Dome. The #23/17 Orangemen (18-6, 7-3) look to avenge a 72-57 loss to the #-/21Panthers (20-4, 8-3) at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse on January 22.
Both teams are in the hunt for a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament that begins Wednesday, March 6. The Panthers, who were picked to finish sixth in the West Division in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll, occupy the top spot in the Division.
Freshman guard Josh Pace came off the bench to tie a carer high with 12 points, including 10 in the second half, to help Syracuse defeat West Virginia, 76-64, on Monday night in the Carrier Dome.
West Virginia came back from a 17-point halftime deficit to tie the game at 58-58 with 6:32 left in the game. SU scored eight of the next 11 points, including four by Pace, to take a 66-61 lead. The Mountaineers would score only three more points in the game as SU went on to seal the win.
Syracuse leads the overall series, 58-27. The Panthers have won the last two meetings, including a 55-54 overtime decision in the 2001 BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals.
