SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Syracuse softball team tied a school record, winning its fifth consecutive game, defeating Miami (OH) 5-1 at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State. The Orangewomen are 8-7, while the RedHawks are now 3-17.
It was Syracuse's fourth victory versus Miami this season, including a doubleheader sweep on March 12.
The Orangewomen jumped out early and never trailed. SU plated two runs in the bottom of the first on redshirt sophomore Cheryl Julicher's (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) school-record breaking fifth home run of the season. It was the fifth straight game that Julicher hit a home run, extending her school record for consecutive game with a homer. Julicher also set school records with an RBI in her fifth straight game and a run scored in her fifth consecutive outing.
Miami scored in the top of the second on a home run by Nikki Pelfrey, but the Orangewomen were able to get the run back in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Katie Kaempfer (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza) did the honors with an RBI double.
Syracuse put insurance runs up in the fourth and fifth innings. Junior centerfielder Christina Holowich (Castro Valley, Calif./Moreau Catholic) hit her first career home run, a solo shot down the left field line. Redshirt sophomore Julie Dunn (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) also drove in a run with a double.
Freshman pitcher Taylor Petersen (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) remained perfect on the season with the complete game win. Petersen is now 3-0 after scattering five hits and striking out six. Abbey Arnold was the loser. She is now 0-2.
Kaempfer had a big game at the plate, recording her first career three-hit game. Freshman leftfielder Tanya Rose (Milwaukie, Ore./Rex Putnam) also had two hits in the game.
