Shumpert's 36 Helps SU Beat Butler In OT, 66-65

SYRACUSE, NY - Senior Preston Shumpert scored 36 points and moved into eighth on the school's career scoring list in a 66-65 overtime win against Butler in the National Invitational Tournament on Monday night in the Carrier Dome.
The Orangemen (22-11) came back from a 13-point deficit, its largest comeback in a victory this season, to defeat the Bulldogs (26-6) in the second round of the NIT.
Shumpert, who passed Billy Owens in the ninth spot (1,840) is now tied with Erik Sontifer in eighth (1,845). It was the seventh 30-point outing of his career.
Syracuse took its first lead since the opening minutes of the game, 45-43, after consecutive baskets by Shumpert with 11:06 left in the second half. After the teams swapped the lead, Mike Monserez tied the game for Butler, 56-56, and the Bulldogs then took the lead with a dunk by Joe Cornette with 40 seconds left in regulation. Freshman Hakim Warrick sent the game into overtime after a layup with 29 seconds left on the clock.
Butler All-American Rylan Hainje opened the overtime with two free throws. Syracuse answered on a three-point play by Shumpert, a jumper by James Thues and Shumpert's three-pointer. The Bulldogs converted five more free throws in the last 1:28 but ran out of time on its last possession.
Brandon Miller and Thomas Jackson led Butler with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Shumpert broke Dave Bing's Syracuse NIT record of 31 points with his 12-of-19 shooting from field. Junior DeShaun Williams was the other Orangemen in double figures with 14 points.
Syracuse travels to Richmond, Va. to play Richmond in the third round of the NIT on Wednesday, March 20 at 9:30 p.m.
