HAMILTON, N.Y. - Freshman goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario/West Hill Collegiate) recorded a career-high 12 saves en route to his first shutout in the SU men's soccer team's 2-0 win at Colgate on Tuesday, September 10. The Orangemen improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Raiders fell to 1-1-1.
Syracuse tallied its first first-half goal of the season when sophomore forward Jarett Park (Tully, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) beat Colgate keeper Will Martin for the eventual game-winner. Junior midfielder Ari Schneider (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) was credited with the assist. It was Park's third goal in his last two games. He now leads the team with seven points.
The Orangemen stretched their lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute when junior forward Kirk Johnson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown) scored his first goal of the season off a feed from senior forward Guido Cristofori (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport). Cristofori's assist marked the third consecutive game in which he has scored at least one point. He has two goals and an assist this season for five points.
Karim made several key stops in net for the Orangemen, including back-to-back diving saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. His 12 saves were the most for an Orangemen keeper since Josh Freeman made 12 stops in a 1-0 win versus Adelphi on August 31, 1996. Colgate keeper Will Martin made eight saves in the loss.
The Orangemen return home for another New York Region matchup on Saturday, September 14 when they host Adelphi at 12 p.m. SU is currently ranked eighth in the NSCAA New York Region poll.
