
Evans and Matrone Record Three Assists in SU Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior forward Anthony Matrone scored one goal and assisted on three others, and sophomore forward Jeff Evans had three assists to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of Cornell at the SU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, October 22, 2003. The Orangemen improved to 3-7-5, while the Big Red now stand at 5-4-1.
The SU victory snapped an eight-game winless streak for the Orangemen. The four goals were their largest offensive output of the season. It is SU's highest-scoring game since a 4-2 win versus Army on October 9, 2001.
Matrone and Evans are the ninth and 10th Orangemen to record at least three assists in a game. They are the first since Jarett Park against Pittsburgh in 2001. The duo teamed up to record double assists on two of the Orangemen's four goals.
Matrone started the scoring in the 17th minute with his second goal of the season and the first game-winner of his career. Senior forward Kirk Johnson crossed the ball into the box where Evans played it along the goal line to Matrone who found the back of the net.
Syracuse put in its second goal with 7:04 left in the first half. Evans and Matrone assisted on a goal by sophomore forward Ilias Calaitzidis. It was Calaitzidis' team-leading fourth goal of the season. SU put the game out of reach just 43 seconds later when Matrone found freshman midfielder Richard Asante who beat the Big Red goalkeeper from about 20 yards away for his first career goal.
After a scoreless start to the second half, senior midfielder Ari Schneider scored his first goal of the season in the 69th minute. Schneider hit a diving header off passes from Evans and Matrone to give the Orangemen a 4-0 lead.
Three Syracuse goalkeeper combined for the team's fifth shutout of the season. Junior Rich Scheer started the game and played the first 67:49. Scheer had SU's only save of the night. .Juniors David Rabazzi and Paul Mitchell each played in the second half. It was Mitchell's first career appearance. Cornell goalkeeper David Mahoney made six saves in the loss.
The Orangemen improved to 3-1-3 this season at home and 2-0-1 in 2003 when scoring at least two goals.
Syracuse plays its final home game on Sunday, October 22nd-ranked Connecticut. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
