SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse men's basketball team lost to the Harlem Globetrotters, 83-70, in its final exhibition contest on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the Carrier Dome.
Sophomore #Billy Edelin# tallied a game-high 20 points and recorded seven rebounds and seven assists in 35 minutes of action. Junior #Josh Pace# scored 16 points and finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. He also had four assists and three steals.
Syracuse held an early 6-4 lead, but the Globetrotters went on 13-4 run that was capped by a Lazarus Sims basket that gave them a 17-10 lead with 13:22 remaining in the first half. With the score 24-21, a three-pointer by former NBA star Cedric Ceballos, two free throws by Jermaine Tate and a fastbreak layup by Keiron Shine extended the Globetrotters' advantage to 34-26 at the 5:06 mark and they closed the half on a 16-7 run to take a 50-33 lead into the intermission.
The Orangemen fought back in the second half. Sophomore #Gerry McNamara# canned a three to open the second frame and three baskets on three successive trips trimmed the Globetrotters' lead to 10 with 16:33 left in the contest. The Globetrotters responded with a 13-7 run of their own and a three-point play by Ceballos gave the Globetrotters a 68-50 edge with 10:13 remaining in the contest. SU would cut the deficit to 11 on four occasions the rest of the way, but could get no closer.
Sims, a former Syracuse point guard and Henninger Highs School product, scored nine points and led the Globetrotters with nine assists. Ceballos notched 20 points, including three trifectas. Jermaine Tate scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards.
The Globetrotters outscored SU 26-13 on second-chance points and held a slight advantage in rebounds, 50-44.
The Orangemen unveiled their 2003 national championship banner in a brief ceremony prior to the contest, bringing a roar from the crowd of 20,733.
SU will tip-off its 2003-04 regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 26 at 7:00 p.m. versus UNC-Charlotte at the Carrier Dome.
