
Edelin Notches Double-Double in SU's 81-63 Win Versus NC-Asheville

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Sophomore #Billy Edelin# recorded his second double-double of the year in the #17/21 Orangemen's 81-63 victory against NC-Asheville on Dec. 28 in the Carrier Dome. The triumph extended SU's winning streak to seven games.
Edelin finished with 11 points and a personal-best 11 assists. He also drilled the first three-point basket of his career in the contest. Edelin picked up his first-career double-double in the season-opener against Charlotte when he scored 13 points and recorded 10 assists.
Junior #Hakim Warrick# paced SU with 18 points. Sophomore #Gerry McNamara# netted 17 points, including five three-pointers. McNamara claimed sole possession of ninth place on SU's all-time three-point field goals made ledger and has 110 in his career. Junior #Josh Pace# was the Orangemen's top rebounder with seven boards. He also added 10 points. Freshman #Darryl Watkins# connected on all four of his field goals and finished with a career-best eight points and four blocks off the bench.
For the second-straight game Syracuse (7-1) never trailed in the contest. The Orangemen opened up an early 10-2 lead versus the Bulldogs. A free-throw by NC-Asheville's Oliver Holmes made the score 21-16 with a 8:07 to play in the first frame, but SU went on a 13-0 run extend its margin to 18 at 3:12. Freshman #Terrence Roberts# ended the streak with a baseline jam and the Orangemen held a 38-21 lead at intermission.
An Edelin layup gave the Orangmen a 21-point advantage, 57-36. NC-Asheville (2-8) wouldn't go away and used a 15-5 run to cut the Orange lead to 62-51 with 6:29 left in the game. The stretch was fueled by Holmes, who had six of his seven points during the run. McNamara responded with his fourth three of day and a layup and dunk by Warrick increased SU's advantage to 69-53 at 4:48. Pace scored four points down the stretch to help preserve the win.
The Syracuse defense limited the opposition to a season-low 31 percent shooting (23-74),
The Orangemen recorded 14 blocks in the contest, the most in a game since they rejected a school-record 16 shots against Colgate on Nov. 28, 2001.
Joseph Barber led NC-Asheville with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Bryan McCullough and Chad Mohn scored nine points apiece.
Syracuse will host Canisius on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m.
