Cary, N.C. – The Syracuse women’s cross country team took 13th place out of 20 competitors in the 5K Nike Race of Champions at the Great American Cross Country Festival, while the men finished 15th out of 19 teams in the 8K Nike Race of Champions.
Freshman Elizabeth Cufari was the top-finisher for the Orange in 25th place, out of a field of 154 runners, with a time of 18:02.80. Senior Leah Folmsbee finished in 19:01.18 earning a 69th-place finish. Rounding out the top-five for the Orange were sophomore Shelby Perkins in 84th (19:15.42), junior Gabrielle Charbonneau in 103rd (19:34.10) and freshman Kathleen Sanborn in 120th (19:53.25).
Other SU runners included sophomore Kelly Pimm who ran a 19:55.45 to finish 121st, while sophomore Katie Simon ran a 20:21.23 for 128th place. Freshman Meghan Rowcliffe (20:51.89) and sophomore Amanda Hicks (21:05.60) finished 140th and 143rd, respectively.
Out of the field of 20, four schools are ranked in the FinishLynx Division 1 Poll. No. 18 Duke was the top-finisher with only 56 points, ninth-ranked North Carolina (85 points) finished second, BYU who finished fourth (124 points) is ranked third, and sixth-place finisher NC State (142 points) is ranked fifth. The Orange finished with 365 points and a total time of 1:35:46.75 placing 13th overall.
The men’s top-finisher was junior Chris Muldoon in 43rd place with a time of 25:47.29. Junior John Graham finished in 26:00.35 for a 55th-place finish. Rounding out the top-five for SU were sophomores David Wishart (26:20.76) and Matt Lawson (26:21.63) in 74th and 75th, respectively, and Joseph Ziminsky in 101st place with a time of 26:53.47.
Other Orange runners to contribute were senior Collin Capano with a time of 27:53.82 in 127th place. Freshmen Matt Gervasio (28:32.98) and Ben Toruik (29:38.44) finished 139th and 145th, respectively.
Five of the 19 teams in the men’s 8K are ranked in the Mondo NCAA Poll. Sixth-ranked Michigan was the top-finisher with 92 points. Eighth-ranked NC State (97 points) took second-place honors. Central Michigan, ranked 18th, finished fifth (173 points) and in a tied for 23rd, Georgia (174 points) and Northern Arizona (272 points) finished sixth and ninth, respectively. The Orange finished with 334 points and a total time of 2:11:21.57 placing 15th overall.
The Orange travels to the Albany Invitational in Albany, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 16.
