McBride Sets SU Scoring Record in 85-65 Loss to #22/21 Miami

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse senior guard Julie McBride set the all-time career scoring record with her first basket of the game against #22/21 Miami on Wednesday, February 18, at Manley Field House. The Orangewomen lost the game, 85-65, and are now 6-17 overall and 3-10 in the BIG EAST. The Hurricanes improved to 19-4 overall and 8-4 in the league.
McBride got the record 33 seconds into the game and scored SU's first nine points to put the Orange up, 9-6, with 17:50 on the clock. Miami went on a 13-2 run to take a 19-11 advantage at 12:29. McBride scored five points during a 9-2 run to cut the Hurricanes' edge to one, 21-20, midway through the half. Miami scored the next 10 points as part of a 13-2 tear that gave the 'Canes a 34-22 lead at 7:05. SU pulled to within seven, 42-35, at 2:27. Shaquana Wilkins hit a jumper with 25 seconds on the clock to give Miami a 44-35 halftime advantage.
The Hurricanes built a 13-point lead, 52-39, by the 18:10 mark of the second half. The closest SU managed to come the rest of the game was eight points, 59-51, with 14:28 on the clock. Miami scored eight of the next 10 points to go up 67-53 at 11:42. Over the final nine minutes, the Hurricanes outscored Syracuse, 18-8, to earn the 20-point victory.
McBride finished with a game-high 31 points, which increased her career total to 1,557. Felisha Legette previously held the record with 1,526 points. McBride. It is the second time this season that she has scored 30-or-more points in consecutive games. McBride now owns the school record for 30-point games in a season (4), 25-point games in a season (6) and 25-point games in a career (8). McBride's 67 points in the last two games is also a school record, topping her own mark of 65 set in the Orangewomen's first two games of the season.
Sophomore Jill Norton recorded a career-high 13 points and a career-best six rebounds off the bench. Norton also tallied a personal best with three steals. Junior Chineze Nwagbo posted 12 points and three boards to snap a string of six straight games scoring in single digits. Freshmen Tracy Harbut and Lauren Kohn each recorded three points and five assists.
All five of Miami's starters finished the game with double digits in the scoring column. Sophomore Tamara James led the Hurricanes with 26 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists. Junior Melissa Knight chipped in 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Chanivia Broussard scored 13 points and had six rebounds and four helpers. Senior Shaquana Wilkins posted 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, while junior Yolanda McCormick finished with 11 points and six helpers.
The Orangewomen had their best shooting game of the season, converting 48.2 percent (27-of-56) of their shots from the floor. However, the Hurricanes shot 52.5 percent (32-61) and outrebounded the Orange, 35-25. Both teams were plagued by turnovers, as Syracuse committed 20 and Miami made 18. The Orangewomen have now lost 15 consecutive games when allowing 80-or more points.
Syracuse will try to snap its nine-game losing streak at Georgetown on Wednesday, February 25, at 8:00 p.m.
