NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The No. 17 Rutgers men's crew won the Ten Eyck Cup for the second consecutive year as the Scarlet Knights' varsity eight defeated No. 15 Syracuse's top crew on Saturday, April 10. Rutgers finished in 5:50.54, while SU crossed the finish line in 5:53.90.
In the second varsity eight, Rutgers finished less than one second ahead of the Orangemen, 6:09.56 to 6:10.42.
"I thought the varsity rowed well, but they were a little scrambled in the top 1,000," SU head coach Dave Reischman said. "We had a better start for the JV, but they were a little scrambled in the bottom 1,000 as opposed to the top."
Both of Syracuse's freshmen crews defeated the Scarlet Knights. In the freshman eight race, the Orangemen won by open water in 6:04.11. Rutgers finished in 6:29.48. In the freshman four race, SU also won by open water, in 6:52.3 compared with Rutgers' time of 7:06.6.
"It was the best effort of the season for the freshmen - a good solid row - giving us lots to build on for next week," SU freshman coach Phil Marshall said. "For the freshman four, it was a great race from start to finish."
