The water was choppy, and the air was chilly on the lake. The crews raced in a strong headwind. The No. 18 SU varsity eight finished second to No. 15 Temple, but defeated ARV Georgetown in the second race of the morning. Temple crossed the line first with a time of 6:37.4. Syracuse beat Georgetown by open water in a time of 6:43.8, and the Hoyas came in third in 7:00.5.
"I thought all three crews rowed well," SU head coach Dave Reischman said. "I thought Temple was more efficient in the first thousand. But all-in-all, I thought we rowed one of our best races of the year."
The Orangemen's JV eight defeated both Temple and Georgetown by open water. SU's time was 6:54.5. The Owls finished in 7:07.1, while GU crossed the line in 7:13.1.
"I thought the JV rowed a clean race," Reischman said. "They handled the conditions well."
Syracuse's freshmen eight improved to 5-0 on the season with it's win against Georgetown. The Orangemen's time was 6:45.7, and the Hoyas' time was 7:04.2.
"We heard coming in that Georgetown is aggressive at the start," freshman coach Phil Marshall said. "The wind conditions definitely helped us. About 300-400 meters in, we got free, and that gave us a mental advantage over our opponent. It was our first stiff headwind race of the season and we did well."
After the final race of the morning, the Orangemen dedicated a new racing shell to former SU athletics physician Dr. Bruce E. Baker '59 and his wife, Patricia Gormel Baker '59.
Syracuse's final dual race of the season will be against Dartmouth for the Packard Cup on Saturday, May 8, in Hanover, N.H.
