ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell's Kristen Smith scored the game-winning goal with 1:39 left to play in the fourth overtime as the Big Red (4-9) upset No. 14 Syracuse (9-4), 13-12, on Tuesday, April 27 at Schoellkopf Field.
The game spanned 73:21, the longest game in Syracuse women's lacrosse history and it marked the Orangewomen's first overtime contest since an 8-7 extra-frame loss to Maryland on March 8, 2003.
Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer led the Orangewomen with six points in the game (four goals, two assists) and established a new Syracuse single-season points mark. She now has 61 points this year, eclipsing the previous standard of 57 points set by Katrina Hable in 1999. Zimmer tied the record with two first-half assists and recorded the record-setting point with an unassisted tally at 38:46.
With SU leading 10-5 with 19:03 remaining in regulation, Cornell notched six unanswered tallies during the next 17:28 to take an 11-10 margin with 1:35 left to play. Zimmer responded for the Orangewomen netting a free-position tally with 36 seconds left in the second half to force the first extra session.
Zimmer gave Syracuse the lead in the first overtime, finding the back of the net with one second remaining in first half of the initial six-minute extra period, but Cornell's Jamie Quinn knotted the game at 12-12 with a goal at 64:30. With 22 second left in the period a shot by senior Danielle Lillis was blocked, but she scooped the ground ball and got it to Zimmer for a chance to win the game, but her shot was stopped by Cornell goalie Maggie Fava with no time left.
In the second overtime, a three-minute sudden-victory session, SU senior Cristine Doran recorded the only shot of period, but again Fava made a big save stopping Doran's chance in the final seconds of the period.
The Orangwomen also held Cornell without a shot in the third overtime, another three-minute sudden-victory period, but Fava stood tall, stopping offensive chances by Zimmer and freshman Jill DePetris and forcing a Zimmer into turnover with eight seconds remaining. The Big Red was able to clear the offensive zone, forcing a fourth three-minute sudden-victory session.
Quinn opened the fourth overtime by winning the draw control and the Big Red was rewarded with a free-position chance after Smith drew a foul on Syracuse freshman Ashley Pike. Smith's attempt sailed wide, but Cornell maintained possession when Kate Hirschfield scooped up the ground ball with 2:32 left in the period. Hirschfield collected another ground ball 28 seconds later to hold possession again and it paid off as Smith notched the game-winner with 1:39 remaining the period.
Junior Monica Joines tallied two points in the contest (one goal, one assist). She now has 101 points in her career. Joines is the seventh player in program history to reach the 100 point-plateau. Doran tallied a season-high three points in the match and sophomore goalie Jennifer Kasel made 12 saves, increasing her season total 154 stops, the second-highest single-season mark in team history.
After trailing 4-2 at the 16:30 mark of the first half, the Orangewomen reeled off five consecutive goals to take a 7-4 advantage at the intermission. Lindsay Steinberg pulled Cornell within two, 7-5, on a goal at 33:15, but Doran beat Fava at 36:59 and Zimmer scored back-to-back goals to put the Orangwomen ahead, 10-5, at 40:57 before Cornell rallied back.
Quinn paced the Big Red with four points on four goals. Smith tallied two goals and one assist and Steinberg, Margaux Viola, Hirschfield, and Lindsay Robinson each had two points for Cornell. Fava made eight saves in the contest, four of them coming in the overtime periods.
Syracuse will play at No. 13 Notre Dame on Saturday, May 1.
