ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team recorded its first shutout of the season, defeating Oneonta, 1-0, at Red Dragon Soccer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 14. SU and Oneonta are both 2-3-0 on the season.
Syracuse goalkeeper Rich Scheer registered his first shutout since the 2001 season. Scheer did not make a save as the SU defense limited the Red Dragons to just six shots, all in the second half. Oneonta goalkeeper Tim Melia made three saves in the loss.
Freshman Brad Peetoom registered his first career goal to put Syracuse ahead 1-0 in the third minute. The play started with a free kick for the Orange just over the half line. The ball was played into the box and knocked around several times until Melia tipped it off the cross bar. Peetoom cleaned up the loose ball with a header into the right side of the net.
Peetoom is the third Syracuse freshman to score a goal this season. Pete Rowley, Isaac Collings and Peetoom have combined for four of the Orange's five goals this season.
The victory was SU's fifth 1-0 victory since the start of the 1999 season. It was the Orange's seventh consecutive game decided by one goal dating back to last season. SU is 3-4 in that stretch. Syracuse has now won back-to-back road games for the first time since defeating Villanova and Rutgers in 2001. The victory also marked the seventh straight for Syraucse against the Red Dragons. The game was the first meeting between the two teams since 1994.
The Orange continue its five-game road stretch on Saturday, September 18 with a match at BIG EAST rival Pittsburgh.
