SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Sophomore forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) scored a career-high two goals to help the Syracuse University field hockey team to a 2-1 double-overtime victory against No. 9-ranked Boston College at Coyne Field. It was SU's third overtime win this week against a nationally-ranked opponent. The Orange is in first place in the BIG EAST Conference with a 2-0 record and is 5-4 overall.
SU is riding a four-game winnnig streak and ran its record to 4-1 in overtime matches this season. Boston College (6-3, 1-1) and Syracuse played a scoreless first half. The action heated up in the second period when Fry gave SU a 1-0 lead by corralling a rebound and blasting a 16-yard shot into the cage for the game's first goal at the 22:08 mark.
The Eagles called timeout with 18:28 remaining and seemed to gain momentum from that point on. A BC scoring attempt was broken up by SU defender Nikki Wojton (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), but officials ruled it illegal and awarded the Eagles a penalty stroke. Kerri Doherty tied the game at 1-1 by lifting her stroke high over SU goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) with 12:46 left in the second half.
In the first overtime, BC outshot Syracuse, 6-0 and had five penalty-corner opportunities. Wagner played aggressive in the cage and challenged the Eagle shooters. She saved five shots in the first overtime and one in the second to finish with a game-high 11 saves.
In the second extra session, Boston College forced two penalty corners and got three shots off. Doherty kept the pressure on with five shots in the two overtime periods.
SU made the most of a rare possession when Fry accepted a pass and went one-on-one with BC goalkeeper Jillian Savoy. Fry's shot was kicked into the air by Savoy and a penalty stroke was awarded to the Orange. Fry went to the line and drilled her stroke into the back of the net.
It was the third goal of the season for Fry and fourth of her career.
Up next for Syracuse are two road games, starting with a trip to Cornell on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Orange will be at Massachusetts.
