SYRACUSE, NY – Junior Gerry McNamara hit five three-pointers to break the SU all-time three-pointer record, while seniors Hakim Warrick and Craig Forth both record double-doubles as #7/7 Syracuse (18-1, 5-0) held off Georgetown (11-5, 3-2) 78-73 in overtime at the Carrier Dome.
The win was Syracuse's 11th in a row and improved the Orange Dome record to 12-0 this winter.
McNamara was 5-for-12 from behind the arc to boost his career total to 251, breaking Preston Shumpert's school record by two. McNamara finished with 17 points, seven assists and three steals.
Warrick finished with his ninth double-double of the season (25 points and 11 rebounds). Forth had 10 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the campaign for the Orange.
Brandon Bowman forced the game into overtime when he hit a jumper from the top of the key with 2.3 seconds left in regulation to knot it at 67, the seventh and last tie of the game.
In overtime, Louie McCroskey broke the tie with a 15-foot baseline jumper. McNamara then drained a three from the right corner and Josh Pace had a steal that he dished out to Warrick for a resounding one-hand slam dunk to give Syracuse a 74-67 lead, the largest for either team in the game.
Jonathan Wallace hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game to pull the Hoyas to 74-70 with 2:39 left, but McNamara hit a push shot in the lane to extend SU's advantage to six. Roy Hibbert converted one-of-two free throws and then made a layup to bring the Hoyas within three, 76-73, but Warrick converted two free throws with 7.1 seconds left to seal the win for the Orange.
The Orange led until the 15:40 mark in the first stanza when Ashanti Cook put Georgetown ahead by one, 8-7. McCroskey scored five of the next six points for the Orange to take the lead, 13-11 with 12:37 remaining. SU trailed for the next seven minutes until Forth made a layup from the right side off a pass of Billy Edelin to tie the game, 22-22, with 5:06 to play in the half, and SU would not trail the rest of the opening period, earning a 36-32 halftime advantage.
The Hoyas came out in the second half and scored eight-straight points to lead by four, 40-36. SU would have a 13-4 run during the next five minutes, in which McNamara had two threes, the second of which broke Shumpert's record, giving the Orange a 49-45 edge.
The Orange was again forced to play from behind as Georgetown took a 56-52 advantage with 9:11 left. Pace put the Orange ahead 61-59 with five and a half minutes to play when he drove into the lane for a basket, drew the foul and converted the three-point play for his 13th and final point. The Orange led 67-65 with 1:11 left in regulation, and Bowman jumper with 2.3 seconds left sent the game into overtime.
This was the 694th win for Jim Boeheim. Boeheim has won 12 of his last 13 overtime games, and is now just six victories away from joining the 700 career wins club.
Bowman led Georgetown with 19 points. Jeff Green finished with 12 points, four rebounds and five assists, and Jonathan Wallace had 12 points. Roy Hibbert finished with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
