Varsity Boats Take Third at Princeton Chase

PRINCETON, N.J. - The SU men’s rowing team had a phenomenal day at the Princeton Chase in Princeton, N.J. on Sunday with the varsity eight and four crews finishing third in their respective races.
SU head coach Dave Reischman was thrilled with his teams performance and progression this in Sunday’s race.
“I thought this race was a continuation of the previous two (Stonehurst Invite, Head of the Charles),” he said. “This race we were a little better and a bit more consistent.”
The varsity eight crew finished third out of 38 boats in the men’s heavyweight eight race in a time of 13:34.11. It was the best finish of the fall season for the crew. SU’s junior varsity eight crew came in 16th place in the same race with a time of 14:03.26. They were the fourth highest finisher of all junior varsity crews.
Senior Tyler Page (Grimsby, Ontario) was in the bow in the varsity eight boat thought he and his crew mates continued to show improvement just as they have throughout the fall.
“This race was a good chance for us to see a lot of the other programs and it was a good opportunity to see where we are at relative to the other programs,” Page said. “We had some troubles at the first two races but we took it all in stride and have been racing faster and faster each race.”
Also in the varsity eight boat with Page was fellow senior captain Dan O’Shaugnessy (Elizabethtown, Ontario) who filled the eight seat. O’Shaughnessy said it feels great to have results like the Orange posted today after the hard work that has been put in to get to this point.
“A lot of guys put a lot into this and today we put it all together,” he said. “From here its important to stay on each other and keep our workouts competitive and just push one another because the teams we finished ahead of today like Boston University, Northeastern and Navy are going to be working hard and they’re going to keep coming.”
In the heavyweight four race, the Orange’s varsity four placed third out of 34 squads in a time of 14:54.85. SU had three other boats competing in the fours race with the Syracuse “C” crew finishing 14th in a time of 15:49.59, while the Syracuse B boat was not far behind placing 17th with a time of 15:56.14. The Syracuse “D” crew came in 24th in a time of 16:20.57.
Reischman, though pleased with his teams results at the Princeton Chase, told his team that this is a great start but must carry this momentum into the spring season.
“I thought we raced hard today and accomplished what we’ve been working towards,” he said. “I emphasized to the guys after the race that it’s fall racing, it’s like the preseason, we showed that we are on track and now it’s up to us to keep working and use this to carry us into the spring.”
