SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men’s soccer team (4-5-2, 0-5-1 BIG EAST) lost its second consecutive game, 1-0, to #5 St. John’s (6-2-3, 4-0-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the SU Soccer Stadium.
The Orange defense, anchored by sophomore Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, British Columbia), continued its solid play, allowing just one goal and giving up few good scoring opportunities to the nationally-ranked Red Storm. Freshman keeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) increased his season saves total to 36 with four stops against St. John’s, including a diving save on the Red Storm’s Steven Old on a penalty kick in the 74th minute that kept the match scoreless.
The Orange outplayed St. John’s in the first half and outshot the Red Storm, 4-1, in the period. SU recorded the best scoring chance of the half 20 minutes into the match when Ezra Prendergast (Kingston, Jamaica) sent a header floating just inches above the crossbar off an Orange corner kick.
With the game scoreless and 16:19 left in regulation, the Red Storm earned a penalty-kick chance after an SU foul in the box. Old took the shot for St. John’s and drove the ball towards the lower right 90, but Cavichhia laid out and made the save. The Red Storm’s shot on the rebound was blocked away by the SU defense.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Red Storm’s Andre Schmid hit Bill Hole in the box with a pass and Hole one-timed it into the net for the game-winning goal at 82:17.
St. John’s outshot the Orange, 10-8, in the match and Red Storm goalkeeper Jason Landers made two saves to earn the shutout.
The Orange will host its second straight ranked opponent on Sunday, Oct. 9 when it meets #22 South Florida at the SU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Admission to the match is free and gates will open at approximately 11:00 a.m.
