SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team (5-5-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) earned its first conference victory of 2005 with a 1-0 shutout of BIG EAST Red Division leader #22 South Florida (6-3-1, 5-1-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The triumph ended SU’s seven-game winless streak and was the Orange’s first victory against a ranked opponent since Oct. 26, 2003 when Syracuse knocked off Connecticut at home.
Sophomore James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H.) provided the winning margin Sunday, netting the first goal of his career in the ninth minute. His tally was set up by Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.), who sent a free kick into the box. A South Florida defender got a touch on it, but the ball found Goodwin, who ripped a low shot past Bulls’ keeper Dane Brenner. Collings registered his team-leading fourth assist on the play.
Syracuse continued to apply offensive pressure and almost added to its margin. In the 34th minute, senior captain Mike McCallion (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) launched a shot from 35 yards out that was just tipped over the crossbar by Brenner. The SU defense was clicking, as well, holding the Bulls to three shots in the first half, none of which were serious scoring threats.
In the 54th minute, SU thought it had another goal when a streaking Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) fired a shot that hit the inside of the goal post, but the ball squirted across the box without crossing the goal line.
It was the first conference loss of the year for South Florida and the contest marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Freshman goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) made six saves in the game to record his fifth shutout of the year. His goals-against average improved to 0.66 for the season with the performance and he increased his save percentage to .840.
The Orange played sounded defense all afternoon and held Bulls’ star Jordan Seabrook, who entered the match second in the BIG EAST with 18 points, to just two shots.
The Orange continues its homestand on Wednesday, Oct. 12 when it hosts New York Region rival Oneonta at 7:00 p.m.
