SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) scored 18 of her career-high 22 points in the second half, but it was not enough as Quinnipiac escaped the Carrier Dome with a 67-63 win against the Orange on Thursday, Dec. 22. Eighteen unanswered Orange points in the second half gave SU a 46-41 lead with 9:45 left in the game, but the Bobcats outscored SU 14-3 to end the game and earn the win.
Down 41-28 with 14:30 left in the game, the Orange exploded for 18-straight points to take the lead. Harbut sparked the stretch with 10 points, while freshman Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wisc.) added four points. SU increased its lead to as many as seven, 60-53, with 3:45 remaining before the Bobcats game-clinching run. Brianna Rooney and Monique Lee both sank free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Harbut was 7-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-10 from the foul line. Both numbers from the charity stripe were career bests. Smith ended the night with a career-high 12 points and matched her personal best with nine boards. Sophomore Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) added 15 points while junior Ashley McMillen (Penfield, N.Y.) had 11. Freshman Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.) tied her career-high with seven assists.
Harbut, Eckhart, and McMillen played the entire game for the Orange. It was Harbut’s and Eckhart’s fifth time playing 40 minutes this season, while McMillen went the distance for the first time in her second-career start.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 11-5 lead 5:05 into the contest. Brianna Rooney nailed consecutive 3-pointers to spur the Bobcats in the early going. The Orange responded with seven unanswered points to take a 12 -11 lead with 13:15 left in the half. McMillen gave SU the lead with one of her three triples. The score was deadlocked 20-20 with 4:50 left, but the Bobcats ended the half with a 10-3 run to take a 30-23 halftime lead.
Turnovers were the story in the first half, as SU had 19 which Quinnipiac cashed in for 14 points. SU forced 10 Bobcat turnovers but managed just five points of them.
For the Bobcats (4-3), Lee had a team-best 20 points and seven rebounds. Erin Kerner contributed 14 points, while Rooney had 13. Quinnipiac attempted 27 3-pointers, which is the most by an SU opponent this season.
SU (6-5) is back in action on Dec. 29 when it travels to in-state rival Cornell for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
