SU Tennis Defeats Brown, 5-2

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team completed a successful weekend with a 5-2 victory against Brown on Sunday, Feb. 13 at Drumlins Tennis Center. The Orange is now 5-1, 1-0 in the BIG EAST Conference.

The Orange took the lead early after winning all three doubles matches by the score 8-5. The freshmen doubles team of Catherine Zawadzki and Victoria Vaynberg defeated Alex Arlak and Anita Ivancevic at the No. 1 position. Sophomore Katie Bramante and junior Wei-Ming Leong, playing at No. 2, defeated Kelley Kirkpatrick and Ashley Pariser, while sophomores Ashley Lipton and Carolina Huignard had the victory against Daisy Ames and Meredith Woodhouse.

Syracuse won the first singles match to finish as Vaynberg made quick work of Arlak, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 position. Brown got its first point with a win at the fourth spot, as Daisy Ames defeated Huignard, 6-0, 6-3.

Lipton and Amanda Saiontz battled all the way through their match at No. 3, before Lipton took control, 7-5, 6-4. The Orange was ahead 3-1 at this point and the other three matches on the court were heading to a third set.

Zawadzki, who had lost the first set, 4-6, came back to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2, against Ivancevic at the No. 2 position, and secured the victory for the Orange.

Bramante, playing in the five-spot, lost the first set, 3-6, to Pariser, then came back to win a hard-fought second set, 7-5. With the match already decided, the two would play a tie-breaker for the third set. Bramante had gotten behind, 1-6, before coming back to win eight-straight points, and eventually winning the match.

The Orange returns to BIG EAST competition on Friday, Feb. 18 at 3:30 p.m. against Seton Hall at Drumlins Tennis Center.
