
Orange Defeats Rutgers, 6-1

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Syracuse tennis team won its sixth-straight match on Sunday, Feb. 20, defeating Rutgers, 6-1. The Orange is 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Orange had a sweep in doubles. Freshmen Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki defeated Jill Markowtiz and Anela Dujsic, 8-0, at No. 1. Junior Wei-Ming Leong and sophomore Katie Bramante had an 8-5 victory against Helen Magomedova and Katrina Elder-Bush at the No. 2 position, while sophomores Carolina Huignard and Ashley Lipton defeated Lauren Edelschein and Alina Balasa in the three-spot, 8-1.
Syracuse had wins at the top-five singles positions. Vaynberg defeated Elder-Bush, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 position, and Zawadzki beat Markowtiz at the No. 2 position, 6-2, 6-1.
Lipton and Huignard both went to a third set to win in their matches at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Lipton won the first set, 6-4, before Dujsic took the second set, 6-3. Lipton was able to come back and win the third set, 6-1. Huignard had lost the first set, 7-5, to Balasa, and was victorious in the second and third set, 6-4, 6-3.
Bramante claimed an Orange victory at No. 5 when she defeated Edelschein, 6-2, 7-5.
Syracuse takes a break from conference play when it plays at Princeton and at Cornell this weekend. It will be a homecoming for two SU players when the Orange plays Princeton on Friday, Feb. 25. Freshmen Victoria Vaynberg and Pearly Leung are both from the Princeton area. The Cornell match is schedule for Sunday, Feb. 27.
