Dragon and Joines Lead SU to 11-4 Victory Against Boston College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Seniors Caitlyn Dragon scored five goals and Monica Joines notched four tallies as the #12 Syracuse women's lacrosse team (9-3, 2-1) scored 10-straight goals to defeat the Boston College Eagles, 11-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. Boston College is now 6-4 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Dragon's five goals was a new career-high, and she added an assist today to tie her career-high with six points. Joines' four-goal effort was her fourth of the season, and she also added an assist to tie her season-high with five points. Joines’ assist tied her with current SU assistant coach, Stacey Brown, for seventh on the career assists ledger with 22 assists.
The Orange took the early lead 3:35 into the contest with a free-position goal from Joines. Boston College evened the score, 1-1, just over halfway through the first half as Susie Breaznell scored for the Eagles. Syracuse answered two minutes later as junior Melody Agnew ignited a four-goal run for the Orange over the next 5:56 as Syracuse took a 5-1 lead into the locker room.
Syracuse opened the second half with Dragon’s third-straight goal, and the Orange proceeded to scored the next six goals to take an 11-1 advantage. SU’s final goal during the run came off the stick of Joines, who had the open net as Boston College made a goalkeeper switch. Boston College made a late run at the Orange, scoring the last three goals of the game, using just 1:11 of the clock.
Agnew added a goal and an assist for the Orange and senior Courtney Palladino had a tally for the Orange. Junior Jen Kasel made eight saves for Syracuse and allowed just four goals. Sophomore Jill DePetris led the Orange with four draw controls, and freshman Bridget Looney forced three Boston College turnovers, won two draw controls and collected three ground balls.
Courtney Legath was Boston College's leading scorer with two points, including a goal and one assist. Tara McKennett played most of the game in the net for the Eagles, making four saves and allowing 10 of SU's 11 goals. Courtney Zwirko, who played the final 7:29 for the Eagles, made two saves and allowed one goal.
The Orange next plays on Friday afternoon, April 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome when Syracuse plays host to Rutgers. The SU men's lacrosse team will take on Albany following the women's game at 7:00 p.m.
