SU Women Defeat Rutgers, 14-9, on Friday Afternoon

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The 13th-ranked Syracuse women’s lacrosse team (10-3, 3-1 BIG EAST) defeated BIG EAST rival Rutgers (4-8, 1-4 league mark), 14-9, on Friday afternoon in the Carrier Dome.
The Orange was led by senior Caitlyn Dragon and junior Meghan O’Connell with three goals each. Senior Monica Joines and sophomores Jill DePetris and Gaddy Fortune all added two goals apiece.
SU jumped out to the early 4-0 lead, off goals by Joines, freshman Allison Furstenburg, DePetris and O’Connell, during the open 12 minutes. The Scarlet Knights found the inside of the net at the 14:45 mark as Kate Shomo scored the first of her three goals in the contest. The Orange responded with the games next three goals during the following four minutes, as Joines, O’Connell and Dragon all connected giving Syracuse a 7-1 advantage. Syracuse led at the half, 9-3.
Rutgers had the first strike in the second half, again off the stick of Shomo, 37:50 in. Syracuse took its largest lead of the game at the 42:38 mark, 12-4, as sophomore Gaddy Fortune sandwiched goals around an O’Connell tally. SU led, 13-5, with just less than 13 minutes remaining, when the Scarlet Knights scored the next three goals to make the Orange margin, 13-8, with five minutes to play. Dragon added her third tally of the game at the 57:33 mark and the Orange when on to win 14-9.
Junior Melody Agnew tied her career-high with three assists and moved into seventh place on SU’s all-time assists list with 24 career helpers.
Freshman Bridget Looney won five draw controls for the Orange and forced two Rutgers turnovers. Junior Jen Kasel made seven saves for Syracuse, allowing just nine goals.
Rutgers was led by Katie Batiuk’s five points, including four goals and one assist. Lyndsey Feldman made 15 saves for the Scarlet Knights.
As a team, the Orange outshot Rutgers 36-24 and won the draw control battle, 16-9.
The Orange travels to seventh-ranked Maryland on Sunday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m.
