COLLEGE PARK, MD. – No. 7 Maryland (10-5) ended the 13th-ranked Orange women’s lacrosse team’s (10-4) two-game winning streak, defeating Syracuse 20-4, on Sunday, April 24 at Ludwig Field.
COLLEGE PARK, MD. – No. 7 Maryland (10-5) ended the 13th-ranked Orange women’s lacrosse team’s (10-4) two-game winning streak, defeating Syracuse 20-4, on Sunday, April 24 at Ludwig Field.
The Terrapins outscored the Orange 6-2 during the first 10 minutes of the game to set the tempo of the game. Maryland then scored the next four goals to take command of the game. With Maryland leading 11-3 at halftime, Syracuse scored the first tally of the second half at 31:37 off the stick of freshman Allison Furstenburg, but the Terrapins would control all the scoring the rest of the game adding nine more tallies to produce the final margin.
Furstenburg led the Orange with two goals, Syracuse’s final two goals of the game, and added two draw controls. Senior Monica Joines and sophomore Gaddy Fortune each contributed a goal and added one ground ball. Senior Courtney Palladino had two draw controls and collected a ground ball. Freshman Bridget Looney finished with a team-best two caused turnovers. Junior goalie Jen Kasel made four saves in 53:00 minutes of playing time, allowing 18 goals, and sophomore Bethel Steele played the final seven minutes allowing two Terrapins tallies.
Annie Collins recorded a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists. She also had four ground balls and two draw controls. Jessica Dorney (three goals, one assist), Katie Doolittle (three goals, one assist) and Kelly Kasper (four goals) all contributed four points. Kirah Miles, the Maryland keeper, made 10 saves and allowed all four Orange goals.
Maryland outshot the Orange 29-23, and was able to control the draw, holding an 18-8 advantage.
The Orange close out its home schedule and with its final BIG EAST game of the season against Notre Dame on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
