Seniors Shine in Final Home Game Against Notre Dame

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Seniors Monica Joines and Caitlyn Dragon each notched four goals, while Courtney Palladino added two tallies as the No. 13 Syracuse Orange (11-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) closed out the 2005 home schedule and BIG EAST portion with a 14-9 defeat of Notre Dame (3-11, 1-4 BIG EAST) on Saturday, April 30 at the Carrier Dome.
Junior Meghan O’Connell added two goals, and sophomore Jill DePetris and freshman Allison Furstenburg each scored one goal in the game. Junior Melody Agnew dished out two assists in the game and moved into fifth place on SU’s all-time assists list with 26, while DePetris’ assist gave her sole possession of 10th-place on the career assists ledger with 20.
Syracuse opened the scoring with three-straight goals by Joines and did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. The Irish’s Crysti Foote scored Notre Dame’s first three goals, but the Orange increased its advantage to five, 9-4, at the half after two goals by Dragon, O’Connell and Palladino.
Syracuse scored three of the first five goals in the second half to increase it margin to 12-6. Dragon and DePetris added SU’s last two goals to lead 14-6 with just over five minutes remaining, but Notre Dame connected for the last three goals of the contest during the final five minutes.
Foote led Notre Dame with four goals and an assist, while Caitlin McKinney added three tallies.
The Orange now leads the all-time series versus Notre Dame, 6-2, and finished the regular season with an 8-1 record at home in the Dome. Syracuse’s only loss in the Dome this season came against Virginia on March 5.
Syracuse plays its final regular season contest on Saturday, May 7 when it travels to Colgate at 1:00 p.m.
