HAMILTON, N.Y. – The No. 12 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team (12-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) finished the regular season with a 17-5 win against Colgate (13-6) on Saturday afternoon at Tyler’s Field.
The Orange now must wait until Sunday’s NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship selection show to see if it will advance to its fifth NCAA tournament in program history.
Five players had hat-tricks for the Orange. Senior Monica Joines led the team with eight points on four goals and four assists. Junior Meghan O’Connell tallied four goals, while senior Caitlyn Dragon tallied a hat trick and dished out on assist. Senior Courtney Palladino and freshman Allison Furstenburg each recorded three goals. Junior Melody Agnew contributed two assists to the Orange’s effort.
O’Connell notched three goals in SU’s 7-0 run in the first part of the second half that helped the Orange open up a commanding 16-4 lead at the 44:05 mark. O’Connell tied her previous best of four goals and four points, which she achieved against Brown earlier this season. She also led SU with six draw controls.
With the Orange ahead 9-4 at the half, SU went on a 7-0 tear during the next 14:05 to blow the game open. Dragon started the run with an unassisted goal just over a minute into the half and O’Connell scored consecutive goals. Palladino and Joines also scored in the scoring burst. Colgate’s Kelly Winning recorded a free-position tally with 12:23 remaining in the game to stop SU’s scoring streak.
Colgate opened the game with two goals during the first minute and a half from Tara Casey and Megan Janson, but the Orange rattled off the game’s next five goals to take the lead, 5-2. A free-position goal by the Raiders’ Katie McVeigh made the score 5-3 at the 10:31 mark, but the Orange scored four consecutive goals. Joines and Furstenburg had tallied hat tricks by the half.
Syracuse outshot the Raiders 39-9, and held a 16-8 advantage in draw controls.
Sue Bielamowicz made a total of 16 saves for Colgate, the most by a Syracuse opponent this season.
