SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Five members of the Syracuse cross team were named to the All-Northeast Region Team. Sophomore Jeff Scull (Jordan Station, Ontario), senior Chris Muldoon (Robesonia, Pa.) and freshmen Dan Busby (New Paltz, N.Y) and Jay Koloseus (Guilford, Conn.) represented the men’s team while sophomore Nana Sang-Bender (Syracuse, N.Y.) earned the honor from the women’s team.
The four men helped guide Syracuse to a third-place finish (of 38 teams) at the NCAA Northeast Regional. The team missed automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championship by one place. The third-place finish was the school’s best finish at the regional meet. Syracuse’s previous best was a 10th-place finish in 2004.
Scull, a transfer from Colorado State, led the Orange in each of the five meets he competed in this season. He finished 12th at the regional meet and missed qualifying as an individual by two places. Scull earned ECAC Runner of the Week honors after finishing third at the National Open (Oct. 7).
Muldoon finished second on the team and 17th overall at the regional meet. Busby and Koloseus recorded the top times in the region by a freshman and were the only two freshmen to earn all-region accolades.
Syracuse’s four representatives on the all-region team were topped only be regional champion Iona. The Gaels had five runners selected to the team. BIG EAST champion Providence, who finished second at the meet, also had four selections to the team. Junior Kyle Heath (Farmington, N.Y.) just missed earning all-region accolades for the Orange.
Sang-Bender placed 12th on the women’s side, leading the Orange to a 10th-place finish (of 37 teams). The result matched SU’s best performance at the regional meet. Syracuse also placed 10th in 1998. Earlier in the season, Sang-Bender became just the third women in school history to earn All-BIG EAST accolades in cross country, finishing ninth at the conference championship. She joined Scull as ECAC Runner of the Week following her performance at the National Open, placing second.
