SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse University varsity eight received the ninth seed at this week’s I.R.A. Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. and is paired in the first heat with top-ranked Princeton and eighth-seeded Yale. The race will be a rematch of a photo finish at the Eastern Sprints on May 21 in which Princeton, Yale and Syracuse all finished within about four tenths of a second of one another, respectively. Rounding out the Orange's heat at the IRA's will be Oregon State, Holy Cross and Michigan. The varsity eight heats are set to begin at approximately 7:36 a.m. on Thursday.
The Orange finished the regular season undefeated and ranked eighth nationally in the USRowing Varsity Eights Coaches Poll. At the Eastern Sprints, Syracuse was sent to the petite final where it finished first after losing to Princeton and Yale in the morning heat. In the first heat, Princeton, Yale and Syracuse all finished almost eight seconds faster than any other boat in the other two heats, however Syracuse was sent to the petite final because only the top two finishers from each heat could advance to the grand final.
SU head coach Dave Reischman said he believes his team gained a great deal of experience from racing in such a hard-fought race at the Eastern Sprints and thinks that it will benefit them in Thursday morning’s race.
“The Eastern Sprints race was our first real tight racing of the season,” he said. “You learn more about yourself in close races and I think that it really helped us prepare for this race at the IRA. There’s no doubt that we can race with any team in the country. That’s not to say we will beat anyone in the country but rather we are eager to race anyone.”
Members of the SU varsity eight this week will be sophomore Ryan Armstrong (Andover, Mass.), senior Terry Wilkin (King of Prussia, Pa.), junior Tim Mambort (Toledo, Ohio), junior Dave Barone (Maumee, Ohio), senior Dan O’Shaughnessy (Elizabethtown, Ontario), junior Bartosz Szczyrba (Poznan, Poland), junior Justin Stangel (Madison, Wisc.), junior Matt Morrow (Hixson, Tenn.) and junior Chad Taylor (New Milford, Conn.).
The top two finishers in Thursday morning’s heats will advance to the semifinals, while all other finishers will move to the repechage heats where crews will still have a chance to move on by finishing first. In Friday’s semifinal races, the top three finishers will move on to compete in the grand final, while the bottom three will advance to the petite final, both to take place on Saturday.
