SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse (3-16, 0-3 BIG EAST) lost a close three-game match to South Florida. The Orange lost 3-0 (23-30, 37-39, 26-30).
“We did not win but we did so many good things in different areas today,” said head coach Jing Pu. “We had four different players get 10 kills each. Most times we played well but at critical times we could not pull it out. Our hitting percentage was better than the other teams so we are improving.”
Junior Cheryl Cobbina led the team with 16 kills and added nine digs. She had 50 total attacks, breaking the school record for a three-game match. The previous record was 46 held by Morgan Jones. Freshman Kacie MacTavish recorded 11 kills and a career-high 14 digs. Sophomore Brittany Kern also registered 11 kills and posted an attack percentage of .625. Freshman Sarah Morton added 10 kills. Sophomore April Quigley recorded a team-high 41 assists to go along with a personal-best 15 digs. Junior Joscie Kaup led the team with 20 digs.
South Florida (6-8, 2-0 BIG EAST) claimed an early lead in the opening game of the match at 5-4 and never lost the lead, pulling out the seven-point victory.
The second game was a back-and-fourth game. South Florida led 26-22 but SU rallied and scored the next six points to take a 28-27 lead. Syracuse had four chance to win the game and the Bulls had five chances before South Florida scored the last three points to take a 2-0 advantage. Syracuse’s 37 points were one shy of the school record set against West Virginia in 2003 and the 76 total points are the most ever in a Syracuse game.
The Bulls jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the third game but the Orange rallied to take a 19-18 advantage. South Florida responded by scoring the next five points and held on for the four-point victory.
