STATE COLLEGE, PA – Junior Nana Sang-Bender tallied a ninth-place finish and led the Syracuse women’s cross country team to a fourth-place performance overall on Friday at the National Open hosted by Penn State. The Orange B men, led by junior Robbie Cary, finished 18th overall.
The Orange women, who received votes in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s (USTFCCCA) national poll for the third consecutive week on Tuesday, finished two places better than No. 17 Duke. Syracuse entered Friday’s competition ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region after opening in the preseason poll at ninth.
Sang-Bender’s time of 21:25 paced three finishes for the Syracuse (21:45) women in the top 30 performances. Senior Liz Cufari finished 15th with a time of 21:34, while freshman Katie Hursey’s time of 21:46 yielded a 25th-place ranking. Sophomore Maegan Krifchin (21:57) and freshman Rebekah McKay (22:34) finished 37th and 42nd, respectively. Freshman Liz McCarter (66th, 22:34) and sophomore Stefanie Slekis (71st, 22:41) completed the Orange attack.
No. 21 West Virginia (21:23) captured the first-place crown on the women’s side while No. 30 Penn State (21:40) and Kentucky (21:46) finished second and third, respectively. Wake Forest’s (21:57) fifth-place performance completed the top five finishes.
Cary led the Syracuse B men’s team and finished 81st-overall with a time of 27:49. Freshman Anthony Socotch (28:32) and sophomore Matt Martina (28:36) tallied back-to-back finishes with 110th and 111th-place performances, respectively. Freshman Michael Brocks (113th, 28:37), freshman Stephen Benedict (116th, 28:44), freshman Erin Schirm (118th, 28:47) and senior Ben Torvik (131st, 29:18) rounded out the Syracuse B men’s line-up.
La Salle (26:38) captured the men’s title with a team time of 26:38. Oklahoma (26:43) placed second in front of Penn State (26:53), Kentucky (26:51) and Guelph (26:54).
The 28th-ranked Orange A men will preview the site of the 2007 NCAA Championships tomorrow in Terre Haute, Ind. at the Pre-Nationals Invitational. The Syracuse men harriers will be one of 26 nationally ranked teams competing, including eight in the USTFCCCA's top 10.
Following Saturday’s action in the Midwest, the Syracuse cross country teams head south down Interstate-81 for the John Reif Memorial on Friday, October 19 at Cornell.
