TERRE HAUTE, IND. – Junior Jeff Scull tallied a team-best time of 23:57 and finished 35th overall as the No. 28 Orange placed 13th out of 40 teams in the men’s 8k white race at the Pre-Nationals Invitational. Saturday’s field, split into two separate 8k races, featured a total of 534 participants and 26 teams ranked in the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll.
Scull’s club-best effort marks the second time this season that the Jordan Station, Ontario native has paced the Orange attack. Scull’s eighth place finish at the Paul Short Invitational on September 28 was Syracuse’s top performance. Sophomore Dan Busby, who finished ninth at Paul Short Invitational, placed 51st on Saturday with a time of 24:05.
Graduate Jordan Davis placed 59th with a time of 24:10 and freshman Steve Murdock finished 89th with a time of 24:25. Senior Kyle Heath (113th, 24:37), sophomore Jay Koloseus (205th, 25:32) and sophomore Brad Miller (228th, 25:46) completed the Orange line-up.
No. 20 Texas-El Paso claimed the race’s top spot with a team time of 23:48. Defending national champion and third-ranked Colorado finished second after posting a total of 23:45. Tenth-ranked North Carolina State (23:57) edged No. 18 Michigan (23:57) for the third spot as No. 7 Notre Dame (24:00) finished fifth. No. 14 Providence, ranked second in the USTFCCCA Northeast Region poll, finished eighth (24:07).
The Syracuse cross country teams are quickly back in action and will head south down Interstate-81 on Friday, October 19 for the John Reif Memorial at Cornell.
