Syracuse, N.Y.-The Syracuse men's crew closed out the dual race portion of its season by sweeping Dartmouth on Sunday, May 20, on Onondaga Lake. The ninth-ranked varsity eight retained the Packard Cup for the first time since 1989-90. Syracuse's JV eight narrowly beat out the Orange third varsity to win the second varsity race. Syracuse's freshman eight earned its second victory of the season with a solid win against Dartmouth.
The Orange varisty eight completed an undefeated dup season for the second-consecutive year by beating Dartmouth handily in the first race of the morning. The Orange came in with a time of 6:04.20, followed by the Big Green at 6:17.00. By winning the Packard Cup, Syracuse defended all four trophies that it won in 2006. The Orange led early in the race and had open water by halfway through as it cruised to the victory.
In the most tightly contested race, the Syracuse JV eight edged past the Syracuse third varsity in the second varisty race. The JV clocked in with the fastest time of the day, 5:59.69, followed by the third varsity (6:02.54) and the Dartmouth JV (6:30.12). The two boats were even throughout, with neither crew able to gain more than a slight advantage. As they came in the final stretch in front of the boathouse, the third varisty had the lead, but the JV turned it on in the last 500 meters to take the win.
The Orange freshman eight won its second dual race of the season. SU led from the start and won in a time of 6:14.69, ahead of the Dartmouth freshman eight who finished at 6:24.52. Syracuse's freshman eight also won the other home dual race against Rutgers.
After the races and the presentations of the trophies, head coach Dave Reischman and members of the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association held a special presentation for the 12 Syracuse seniors. The Class of 2007, the first of Reischman's recruits at Syracuse, were presented with blankets from the Syracuse Athletic Department, plaques from the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association, and letters from the Orange Club. Dr. Bruce Chamberlain, one of the founders of SARA, was in attendance to honor the seniors and welcome them into the rowing association.
"This was my first recruiting class and really a special group of guys," Resichman said of his seniors. "When they came in, I challenged them to change the culture of rowing at Syracuse. They had an undefeated cup season as freshman, went undefeated in the cup season as juniors, and today completed another undefeated season. Their success is about more than what they have achieved on the water or the dedication they have shown to the program. They have excelled academically and have provided great leadership for the underclassmen."
The Orange will next compete in the I.R.A Regatta, which begins May 31 in Camden, N.J.
