Orange Varsity Fours Reach Grand Finals

Camden, N.J.-Syracuse had two four boats reach grand finals on the second day of competition at the 2007 IRA Regatta on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Orange will be represented in the varsity open four and varsity without coxswain grand finals on Saturday. The Syracuse varsity eight advanced to the third level final, the second varsity eight advanced to the petite final and the freshman eight is also in the third level final.
In the varsity fours races, both Syracuse boats competed in repechage heats and needed wins to advance to the grand final. In the varsity open four, the Orange took first place in the second repechage with a time of 6:46.292. Harvard came in second (6:50.191), followed by Georgetown (6:57.032) and Navy (7:05.413). Washington, California, Cornell, Princeton, and Northeastern will take on Syracuse in the grand final on Saturday at 10:26 a.m.
In the varsity four w/o coxswain race, the Orange placed first in the first repechage heat with a time of 6:25.941. Georgetown came in second (6:35.710), Yale in third (6:38.269), and then Boston (6:40.591) and Michigan (6:45.525). Syracuse will face Hobart, Navy, Colgate, Harvard and Wisconsin in the grand final at 10:50 a.m.
The Syracuse varsity eight claimed third place in the third semifinal, with a time of 5:41.097, to qualify for the third level final. The heat was extremely close, as Virginia (5:40.370) edged past Boston (5:40.425) in a photo finish, just ahead of the Orange. All three boats qualify for the third level final, along with Navy, Georgetown, and Penn, at 1:33 p.m. on Saturday.
The Syracuse JV eight was in the second varsity eight second semifinal, with the chance to reach the grand final. The top three boats in the first two semis advanced to the grand final, and the Orange fell one slot shy, coming in fourth place with a time of 5:51.591. Brown, Cornell, and Harvard A finished in the top three, while Yale B, Penn, Yale A, Harvard B, and Northeastern will join Syracuse in the petite final at 12:54 a.m.
The Syracuse freshman eight took second place in the fourth semifinal with a time of 6:04.341 and qualified for the third level final at 8:58 a.m. Syracuse will take on Boston, Wisconsin, Columbia, Navy, and Dartmouth.
