Head men’s rowing coach Dave Reischman announced that David W. Weiss has been hired to serve as the freshman coach and recruiting coordinator at Syracuse University.
Reischman is confident that Weiss is the perfect fit for the job.
"I feel very fortunate to be able to make this choice from an extremely strong field of candidates,” Reischman said. “As I talked to various colleagues who have worked with coach Weiss they all had the utmost of respect for the energy and intelligence he brings to his coaching and, more importantly, his ability to bring out these same traits in his athletes. I am very excited to have him coaching our freshmen and serving as our recruiting coordinator here at Syracuse.”
Weiss comes to Syracuse after coaching the freshmen boats at George Washington from 2005-07. At the ECAC Championships in 2006, Weiss coached the freshman eight to a fifth-place finish. Most recently, Weiss led both his freshman eight and four boats to 11th-place finishes at the 2007 IRA National Championships.
Weiss joined the Colonials from Sidwell Friends High School where he was the coach for the girl’s team and was named All-Met Girls Coach of the Year in 2004 by the Washington Post.
A 2001 graduate of Georgetown University, Weiss was team captain and MVP of the Hoyas in 2000-01. As a member of the Hoyas' varsity eight, Weiss won gold medals at the 2001 ECAC championships and at the 1998 Champion International Regatta. Rowing in the men's four, Weiss's shell advanced to the second round of competition in the Visitor's Cup at the 2003 Henley Royal Regatta in England.
Weiss is excited about the opportunity to coach at Syracuse.
“Syracuse University has long boasted one of the elite collegiate men's rowing programs in the country,” Weiss said. “Joining coach Reischman and the oarsmen of Syracuse as the freshman coach presents to me a challenge that is both exciting and humbling. I am privileged to have the opportunity to help the Syracuse freshmen achieve success on the water and beyond."
