When Syracuse women’s basketball freshman Tasha Harris first started playing basketball, it was more by coercion than it was by choice. This was because basketball was the only gateway for her to be able to play outside with her brother. His passion for the game made it so that the only way Harris could play outside with him was if she played basketball. She eventually surrendered to her brother’s terms at the age of six.
“I always wanted to go outside with my brother but he would always play basketball. So he made it so that in order for me to go outside, I had to play basketball. It was from all the playing that I began to love the game.”
It is clear now that Harris’ brother’s passion for the game rubbed off on her. Her same passion for the game drove her to develop into a player that amassed more than 1,000 points during her four years in high school.
Harris comes to Syracuse from New York City, a city that is considered to have some of the best basketball talent in the nation. She finished her high school career named as a First-Team All-Manhattan and rated as the No. 45 recruit in the country by Blue Star Basketball. Harris is determined to continue her successful career while helping build the program here at Syracuse.
“I didn’t want to go to just any program, I wanted to go help build the program and I felt this was the best place for me,” said Harris. “I chose Syracuse because on my official visit I really liked the school, the coaching staff and the players.”
Harris is excited to start playing for the orange when the team begins its 2007-2008 season in November. With her desire to win and compete at the top level, she looks forward to seeing what the Orange can accomplish. Harris has big plans for her team during her four years with the Orange and hopes to help lead the team to a national championship.
“We haven’t made it to the Final Four yet, so that is the first step and then hopefully before I leave, win it all.”
