The weekend of Oct. 10-12 was a busy weekend in Syracuse athletics with six teams competing in 10 separate events. The women’s field hockey team remains the lone undefeated team in the country after posting wins against Georgetown and American. The volleyball team won two-consecutive BIG EAST road games versus Georgetown and South Florida. The men’s soccer, women’s soccer and women’s ice hockey teams all played close games but were unable to record a win. The Orange swimming and diving team opened its 2008-09 season on Friday with the men recording a 184-104 win against the Colgate Raiders.
Field Hockey
The Syracuse hockey team remains the lone undefeated team at 14-0 in the NCAA after winning both of its weekend road games. The Orange earned a 16-0 win against Georgetown on Friday. The 11 goals scored in the first half shattered SU’s former record of seven. Nine team members scored goals for Syracuse. Senior Shannon Taylor led the Orange with nine points on three goals and three assists. Freshman Martina Loncarica was second on the team with eight points off of three goals and two assists. Sophomores Kristen Girouard and Lindsey Conrad and senior Tracy Detrick scored two goals apiece. Sophomores Maggie Befort and Shelby Schraden and freshmen Anne-Sophie Van der Post and Mariana Vernet each added one goal.

Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team played a midweek matchup with No. 8/5 St. John’s on Wednesday, suffering a 4-2 setback to the Red Storm. Senior Kyle Hall and junior Hansen Woodruff scored SU’s two goals in the first half. The teams were tied 2-2 at the half, but the Red Storm would hold the Orange scoreless in the second half to win the game. Senior keeper Robert Cavicchia was credited with his second career assist on Woodruff’s goal. In Saturday’s game 3-2 OT setback to Rutgers, seniors Pete Rowley and Spencer Schomaker scored both of SU’s goals.

Volleyball
The Orange volleyball team earned two BIG EAST road wins this past weekend against Georgetown and South Florida. Junior Kacie MacTavish led the team in kills in both matches, tallying 13 versus the Hoyas and 17 versus the Bulls. She posted double-digit digs in both matches to register her sixth and seventh double-doubles of the season. Leading on defense in both matchups was junior Sarah Morton. Against Georgetown, Morton led the Orange with seven total blocks and versus South Florida, she tallied nine block assists. Senior April Quigley served as the primary setter in both matches with 34 assists against the Hoyas and 39 against the Bulls. Quigley also came up big on defense against the Bulls, contributing nine total blocks.

Women's Soccer
The Syracuse women’s soccer team had a tough weekend after suffering two 1-0 setbacks to BIG EAST opponents. In the game versus South Florida, the Orange outshot the Bulls 9-0 in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net. In the first home loss of the season, goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made three saves. On Sunday, the Orange faced BIG EAST division leader Marquette. Marquette’s only goal was scored in the first half. Syracuse played a man down for most of the second half, but was able to keep Marquette scoreless. The Orange outshot Marquette 11-7 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Cross Country
After three strong performances so far this season, the Syracuse cross country team is preparing for trips to Pennsylvania and Indiana this weekend. On Friday, October 17, the Orange will compete in the National Open held in State College, Pa. On October 18, Syracuse will compete in the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.

Women’s Ice Hockey
Junior goalkeeper Lucy Schoedel recorded her 100th career save in Friday’s 1-0 setback to Robert Morris. She made 31 saves in the game. Leading the Orange in shots was sophomore Stefanie Marty with five. In Saturday’s 3-2 loss, two freshmen accounted for the goals. Megan Skelley and Stefanie Mullan both scored off of powerplays. SU recorded a season-high 21 shots and Schoedel tallied 21 saves. Schoedel has stopped 151-of-168 opponents’ shots this season for a .899 save percentage.

Swimming and Diving
In the opening meet of the 2008-09 season, the Orange men earned a 184-104 win against the Colgate Raiders. The women put in a strong performance but suffered a 201-92 setback to the Colgate women. Highlights from the men’s competition included a sweep of the 200 fly. Junior Boldizsar Kiss won the event (1:52.80), followed closely by sophomore Brian Zimmerman (1:58.93) and senior Peter Gollands (1:59.80). Kiss also won the 100 free (48.21), th 100 fly (52.15) and helped the 400-freestyle relay team of senior Matt Brock, junior Alex Taraskin and Gollands win the event with a time of 3:14.78. Sophomore Natalie Mazzetta led the Orange women winning the 1,000 free (10:21.17). Senior Danielle Stein added three second-place finishes to the Orange women’s results.
