SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team (12-9, 4-1 BE) stepped out of conference play tonight as it swept the Niagara Purple Eagles, 3-0. Juniors Sarah Morton and Kacie MacTavish led the Orange with 11 kills apiece.
“It was a good team effort,” assistant coach Carol LaMarche said. “Everyone was able to get in and produce good results. I think we kept our intensity level up. It’s a good win for the team because it boosts everyone’s confidence. If we need to sub any one of them in, they know they can get the job done.”
Joining Morton and MacTavish in tallying kills were freshman Erin Little with six, senior Emily Kaier with four and senior April Quigley and sophomore Mindy Stanislovaitis with two each. Quigley and freshman Hallie Morse served as setters in the match with Quigley posting 21 assists and Morse registering 11.
Leading the Orange defensively was freshman Noemie Lefebvre with 14 digs. MacTavish contributed 12 and added two solo blocks, while junior Shanetha McLaurin had five digs.
The first set started out slow with neither team developing a lead until midway through the frame. With the score tied 12-12, Syracuse would slowly tack on the points forcing Niagara to take two back-to-back timeouts. The Orange, however, was unfazed and would close the set, 25-18.
The second and third sets were all Syracuse. The Orange took a 3-0 lead to start off the second set. The lead would grow to 12 before SU won the set with a powerful Morton kill, 25-13. Despite letting the Purple Eagles on the board first in the third, the Orange went on an 11-point scoring run to put them out of Niagara’s reach. The Purple Eagles battled back to within six points, but couldn’t develop the momentum to overtake Syracuse. The Orange won the third set, 25-17.
Syracuse travels to Milwaukee, Wis. on Saturday, October 18 to take on conference foe Marquette. Action begins at 2 p.m. From there, the Orange will finish out non-conference play when it travels to Siena on Tuesday, October 21.
